Jobportraits

24h

Crossroads, a small group of people wearing orange vests and a yellow tripod with them - that might be the first thing a person imagines if one thinks of the daily routine of geodesists. But that is still far away from the whole picture; geodesy embraces much more different fascinating tasks and professions. In the following some geodesists talk about their exciting and varying every day work life.

Frank Friesecke

Project manager at STEG Stadtentwicklung GmbH / Stuttgart

Which tasks do you have in your job?
I manage projects of renovation, development, social city and urban reconstruction of zones in different cities and municipalities all over Baden-Württemberg. I am responsible for urban and conceptional consulting and in addition for the financial management of area-based actions which are based on development funds from the federal government and the communities.

What did you do last week in your job?
Last week I gave information concerning the program ¨social city¨ to 8o inhabitants of the city of Uhingen. This was part of public participation. Then I met private owners at their properties to help with actions of renovation. At the office we were glad to welcome a major of a city to clear some questions about further urban development. My daily work is very various and mixed between the office job and field working. Working in the office is mostly doing expert reports, urban concepts and contracts. Field working means many meetings with representatives of the municipal administration like Major, architects, finance director and private owners.

What is interesting and exciting in your job?
The high degree of uniqueness of each city is influencing my daily work at STEG. There is no standard available as there are always different demographic and economic circumstances. Each individual structure of a city and the people there lead to unique specific urban tasks. Primarily the search for creative solutions makes the job so exciting.

Which characteristics and abilities are helpful in the property of engineering in your opinion?
A strong interest in mathematics, physics, statistics and geo-informatics is necessary for sure to complete engineering studies successfully. Structural logic thoughts shall be learned and studies and Ph.D. have helped me. During my studies the training of communication abilities has been too small unfortunately. A geodesist should give good information concerning his profession especially during discussions and presentations. He should answer very clearly and confidently to questions like ¨these are the people on the street with the red and white rods?¨. These characteristics should be improved at the universities.
